About the building

Source  : Abergavenny Local History Society Survey 1980:

Both 25/25A : Demolished in 1977 due to large cracks in the fabric.

Replaced by “Red Square” (named becaues of the large red girders that were used)

All three shops (nos 25, 25A & 26) were bought by the Highways Dept for road widening in 1922.  They became the property of the Borough Council and finally of Monmouth District Council. (source at time of original survey : Mrs Bevan, 5 Flannel Street)

No. 25 : the staircases were very narrow, but plenty of room above.  Mrs Powell brought up her family here. In the cellar there were 3ft thick stone arches and tombstones.  The whole shop appeared to be supported by a single beam (source at time of original survey : Mrs Bevan, 5 Flannel Street)

At time of last survey, Cardiff Museum had photographs of the buildings, including the cellars, arches and tombstones found in the cellars, taken just before the demolition.

Other information

Before 1906, no. 25A was probably with no. 25, as there are no other records

There are very few adverts found in the local Abergavenny Chronicle for this property.  In 1971 and again in 1973, No. 25 was Winifreds – sewing machine service and repair and a hat shop.
