About the building

Source : Local History Survey 1980

Building dated to early 19th century by Welsh Office

In the attic are the working parts of a pulley sytsem for hoisting goods (?flour, grain) to the upper floor from the yard below. The rope would round a particularly fine wooden drum.  The cellar has been sealed off and could not be examined in 1979.  Specimens of labels used for the wines etc bottled on the premises are lodged in the museum, as is a cold meat press in aluminium.

The property in 1836 was “formerly called the Red Lion”.  By 1836, it was divided into three separate premises as shown in the plan below, with a central passage for access to no. 6A between 6am & 11pm (plan D591.2.97).  At this date, it was mortgaged to Rachel Herbert and bought by Joseph Meredith, who occupied no. 5

1836 plan of nos. 5 & 6 Cross Street from the Deeds in Gabb Collection D.591.2.97.
